Matera
An unmissable destination if you are thinking of exploring the Southern Italy, Matera is a city in the Lucanian territory on the border with Puglia and is the flagship tourist city of Basilicata, a little-known region. Matera is famous for its bread and above all for the ancient districts “Sasso Caveoso” and “Sasso Barisano”. Since 1993 it has been recognized as a UNESCO heritage site, in particular for being considered one of the oldest sites in the world to be continuously inhabited.
This thousand-year-old city deserves a stay of at least two nights to appreciate the value of its historical heritage and to admire the variety of uncontaminated nature in the Murgia Matera park.
With a longer stay, Matera also works as a starting point for getting to know and exploring the internal territory of Basilicata, an authentic place little known to large tourist flows.
