(Daytrip) Tursi and Craco: the Lucanian Gullies
Overview
If you decide to dedicate part of your trip to discovering the hinterland of Basilicata, you cannot help but choose to enter the area of the “Calanchi”, in the hilly surroundings of Matera, suggestive clay formations, recalling lunar landscapes. During this day trip, you will visit some of the most iconic places in Basilicata, Tursi and Craco.
The first stop is Tursi with its “Rabatana”, where, walking through the alleys of this ancient Arab district, we will visit the church of Santa Maria Maggiore with the famous frescoed sixteenth-century crypt and, not far away and completely surrounded by greenery, we will be able to admire the Sanctuary of Anglona with the 12th century frescoes, and enjoy the surrounding panorama.
Lunch will be based on typical Lucanian products served in a traditional family-run farm, where the hosts will show you the animals that have been raised for generations with care and respect and some of the processing activities. The visit to the farm ends with a relaxing walk up to the panoramic view overlooking the entire valley from which you can see the heel and toe of the boot.
In the afternoon we will move to Craco, a ghost town with timeless charm, an extraordinary town, abandoned in the 1960s following a landslide that destroyed a large part of the town, and whose remains, perched on top of a hill, can be visited today as ruins of the ancient village. The walk develops along the path made safe by the Municipality, until reaching the Norman tower from which you can enjoy a breathtaking landscape.
