Sassi walking tour
Overview
The first approach to the city of Matera is often deceiving, as the Sassi remain hidden from view at first. These are two particular urban areas vertically built within a canyon, on one side of the Matera ravine, so it is possible to suddenly see them, only when you reach the edge. Over the centuries, the urban area of the Sassi has undergone so many processes of transformation and stratification that its architecture is among the most fascinating in the world. Accompanied by a professional and certified guide, the walk will be punctuated by various stops for historical-social, architectural and urban planning. Among the various stops it will be possible to visit from the inside some interesting sites carved into the rock, such as the rock church of Santa Lucia alle Malve, a Palombaro (a sophisticated water collection system) or a typically furnished peasant cave house. This tour takes place entirely on foot within the Sasso Caveoso district.
